Position – Lifting Subject Matter Expert
Type – Contract
Rate – £60.00 per hour Umbrella Co OR PAYE equivalent (Neg DOE)
Duration – 12 Months +
Hours – Typically 38 hours per week
Determination – Inside IR35
Security – UK BPSS / SC Security Clearance to be in place
Location – Devonport, Plymouth, UK / Remote (2 days per week office based)
Start Date – ASAP

Primary Purpose;
Ensure planning, supervision and safe execution of lifting operations allocated to the individual. (in accordance with LOLER) (Ensure lifts under your control are suitably planned, supervised and executed in a safe manner.)

Understand legislation, site policy and work activity standards for lifting and plant operations. Challenge personnel who are witnessed to breach standards. (The standards you walk past is the standard you accept. Do not walk past something that is not to standard    

Work with Lifting Services to identify demand for lifting plans and solutions. Work alongside customers to achieve suitable solution on time that are safe and efficient.

Take part in planning meetings and where required control / input into planning tool for the area in which you operate. 

Plan lifting operations in line with British Standards and lifting equipment operating instructions. Identify hazards and mitigate these through the use of control measures. Any plan should be documented in a way that allows it to be easily communicated to the workforce at a level they understand.

Enforce standards for personnel supervising and executing lifting operations. Understand standards and communicate these to operational personnel in lift plans. Continue to review (watching the game) and raise standards. (Auditing).

Identifying required resources to undertake lifting activities. Ensure all those involved in the lifting activity are briefed and understand the task at hand. This activity can be passed to crane supervisor but the responsibility remains with AP. Verify resources are in place and operating in line with Lift Plan.  

Build relationships with your team and personnel within your area of control, understand who they are and their personal motivations, strengths and weaknesses. Spend time with team understanding their contribution, challenges and results. Understand teams’ status with regards to means and ability. Drive for excellent performance.

Where required mentor and provide guidance to personnel. Take necessary action to recognise contribution and performance. Promote and encourage ownership and accountability for all staff and work force within area of control.

Champion safety and lead by example. Report events identified as part of auditing and watching the game activities. Take action to address immediate risk to personnel or equipment. 

Support investigations of events allocated to you by Lifting Services Management Team. Identify root causes and contributing factors and propose solutions to resolve issues.

Manage lift plans in line with standard set by lifting services management team. This requires AP to monitor open lift plans and close completed plans in line with Lift Plan Register. Archiving of plans should be done in accordance with filing standards.

Support and drive a cultural shift within the Lifting Services Team. Encourage communication at all levels through regular briefing of teams, watching the game and being present for teams.

Record operational data and feedback into tools provided by lifting services management team.

To manage the career development of staff within team. Identify roles and individuals that should be considered as part of a succession plan. Support alignment of training to set standards.

Identify continuous improvement opportunities and projects and feed these into the team LFE capturing tool. Undertake allocated actions that are generated as part of the LFE process.

To investigate best practice and bench mark against similar and differing organisations.
