Rate – Up to £60.00 per hour Umbrella (INSIDE IR35)
IR35 Status – INSIDE IR35
Contract Length – 12 month contract (likely to be extended)
Hours per week – 36 hours
Location – On site at Devonport initially but Flexible/Remote working is an option
Security Clearance Required – SC Security Clearance (client will sponsor)

The purpose of the Docking & Berthing Principal Engineer post is:

  • To manage the delivery of ancillary structures engineering work packages to the required scope, quality, schedule and cost.
  • Be responsible for managing the technical aspects of the Docking & Berthing packages from identification of the need, through to handover including Structures, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and other disciplines such as Architectural.
  • The post operates as part of the Major Infrastructure Business Unit. 
Tasks & Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the Docking & Berthing design package and other Structures sub-packages as assigned agreeing project related objectives, managing overall designer performance and making appropriate technical management responses.
  • Provide technical design guidance and review of civil / structural design of elements for structures for defined loading.    
  • Ensure that the design documentation covers the scope of operations required by the Project Manager and is produced to agreed standards, schedule and budget.
  • Plan for effective project implementation, identifying key factors and leading the project’s technical planning process.
  • Ensuring effective Quality Management Arrangements, operate and deliver through compliance with Babcock’s Business Management System and Technical Manual.
  • Ensure that the processes and activities being managed are appropriately documented with appropriate records maintained and configuration and quality controls applied.
  • Support the 10 Dock Design Manager – Mechanical Handling & Services on implementing the project approach to Health, Safety and Environmental issues as applicable to design.
  • Demonstrate and promote the necessary safety culture within your area of responsibility and sphere of influence, continually assessing behaviours in your area.  Where appropriate you should raise any nuclear safety concerns to the person responsible for that activity, their senior Line Manager, or a member of the DRDL Board.
  • Ensure that staff and contractors are familiar with the hazards and risks (Health, Safety & Environment) associated with the work undertaken by the delegated engineering team through effective management and communication of the Risk Assessment.    
  • Ensure that system delivery of the mechanical and electrical engineering packages interface with the other discipline packages to resolve conflicts / clashes.
  • Communication of operational capabilities for systems to ensure that the overall operational concept meets the high level capability requirements of the Facility.
  • Communicate design specification enabling justification and fulfilment of any associated Safety Functional Requirements (SFRs).   
  • Communicate on project deliverables to scope, schedule and cost. Raise any technical issues that may have an effect on overall project delivery.    
  • Demonstrate that the designed systems will meet the functional User Requirements.
  • Attain information on current systems, learning from experience, dockyard best practice etc    
Experience Required:
  • The post holder must be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge and skills required in the technical management of complex design development throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Provide expert advice to the sub-contracted design houses to enable them to develop the design.
  • Sound understanding of engineering design and safety practice as relevant to discipline, post and project requirements including Systems Engineering.
  • Sound project specification, planning, project management and budgeting experience.
  • Sound understanding of Company and departmental procedures relating to Design, Health & Safety and Quality requirements, and ability to manage projects in accordance with these procedures.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering office computer applications.
  • Experience of the design support to construction, operation, refit/repair of conventional and nuclear submarines and/or facilities.    
Qualifications:
  • A Master’s or Batchelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer, registered with Engineering Council.    
  • NUC0793 Nuclear Plant Foundation Course Module 1
  • NUC0794 Nuclear Fundamentals (Foundation) Course Module 2
  • NUC0911 Introduction to Safety Engineering   
  • Design and substantiation of structures to relevant seismic codes for satisfying Nuclear Safety Functions;
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design and installation Knowledge of construction techniques employed for Nuclear Safety related civil structures and buildings.
